As we go into this holiday season I laugh at how early I see Christmas and Thanksgiving decorations in stores and while I marvel at their brazen commercialism it inspired me to stop and think about giving thanks. I was with some of my people and instead of going and doing something we decided to chill and chop it up meaning, we ate, caught up, and enjoyed each others company. We remembered why we really all liked each other and were thankful for I Know What You Did Last Summer type of friends. Not the movie, just friends who see you through all the nonsense. When your money's funny, you disparage marriage and your kids.....whew.......your kids make you think about the receiver Chris Carter.....Come on Man!!

Even as a pastor, I don't know if I really take time, as often as I should, to thank God for who he is and what he's done while I'm navigating this life too. That reality reminds me of my frailty and imperfection while simultaneously reminding me of his grace, strength and perfection.

I like the story in Genesis 14 when Abraham, God's man, rescues pagan idolatrous cities and upon his return from victory, Melchizedeck, the King of Salem and high priest of The Most High, offers Abraham bread and wine as a representative of the earthly and heavenly kingdom, he offered Abraham communion and essentially a seat at the table. I see hospitality but I also see how God always goes beyond meeting us where we are but has prepared for us and has equity in a relationship that we didn't even know was available.

Today I'm thankful that God, through Jesus' sacrifice has offered us a seat at the table to Chop It Up not just for today but forever.
